Reminders for Class #6 (Wednesday 10/27)

As Soon As Possible: Sign up for a conference time to meet with me sometime on 10/12-10/15 or 10/18-10/19. I am sharing all of you a Google Document for this, but you could also email me a request.

Friday 10/8: Post results from tonight's class exercise to this blog entry. (Types of sources in one of your disciplines, standards of evidence/proof in one of your disciplines, what critical thinking means in one of your disciplines... or answer for your partner as you arranged.) Remember, we're calling this Research log #4 1/2 and replacing one of the ones you would have done later.

Monday 10/11-ish: Revise Project Description according to my suggestions, and send to your faculty advisor. (I asked some of you to revise and resubmit to me first.)

Wednesday 10/20-ish: Post Research Log #5 to this blog entry. The topic should be the current status of your relationship with your faculty advisor. So definitely wait to do this until after you've corresponded with the advisor about your project description.

Wednesday 10/20: I highly recommend that you attend the following lecture on the Mason campus if you are able to! If you want to attend and write a short review for the blog, that could replace one of your required research logs.

Lecture: Annie Leonard
October 20, 2010 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Johnson Center, Cinema
"The Story of Stuff," presented by environmental activist and author Annie Leonard. Reception and book signing will follow.

Friday 10/22: Email or Docshare me an Annotated Bibliography with at least 10 entries. As given tonight, the format is as follows: 1) Bibliographic Citation for source according to the discipline-specific style standard you've selected. Then the annotation: 2) Thesis or main idea of source... WHAT is being argued. 3) Evidence or method of source... HOW is it being argued. 3) Audience of source... WHO are the readers it addresses. 4) Purpose of source... WHY is it written? What is the author trying to accomplish? These last four could be accomplished in 2-4 sentences. You can write more if it's helpful, but don't write a novel. 5) Is the source your "family," "friend," "enemy," or a "one-night-stand"? ("Strangers" and "help wanted" are important to classify but shouldn't be included in your annotated bibliography. Remember you will always reassess your sources, so even friends may become strangers. 6) What makes this source useful to you? 7) What are the limitations of the source, or reasons it might not be useful? 8) This source relates to one (or more) of your others sources how? Those last four could also be done in 2-4 sentences.

Wednesday 10/27 (before class): Email or Docshare me your first draft of the Background Literature Review. Remember, the Drafting an Investigative/Creative Proposal handout gives fairly specific instructions. The class will meet again in Student Union II (SUB II), room 7. We'll try it one more time and make sure there isn't a rock concert or something going on.

The main sources I will be using for the discipline of Theater are going to be books, interviews, and newspapers.

What will constitute as my evidence and proof in this discipline is going to be how acting was defined and looked at in the past, and who looked at it, such as Aristotle, The Opinions of the French Academy, Jean Racine, Henrik Ibsen, and Emile Zola.

Someone who is applying critical thinking in this field is doing so by applying early knowledge of the philosophies of how acting began through the above philosophers. Then, recognizing how to apply that knowledge by demonstrating the techniques they have been trained in.

  12. Gail Cariota – Research Log #5 Re: Relationship Update

Sorry, I don’t want to overshare, so no juicy details here. However, I will tell you that my faculty mentor won my heart in the spring when she graciously agreed to assist me during my summer internship. She took on this task despite the lack of additional compensation for this work. I believe it says a great deal about her desire to help her students. I was extremely appreciative of her efforts. I also did my best to remain low maintenance. (I hope that she felt that this was the case. . .)

One of the best things that my faculty mentor does for me is that she brings an enthusiasm to everything she puts her hands on, and that enthusiasm is infectious. I was able to take one of her classes in the spring, and I enjoyed it very much. I feel that we can be honest with each other, and we get along great, but I can’t imagine that anyone would not get along well with her.

The main drawback that I have encountered is that she is extremely busy with multiple demands and may be hard to reach at times. I knew this going into the situation, but I also think that will be the case with any mentor. Who isn’t busy these days? I’d like to meet that person. As adult learners we are experienced problem-solvers, and cognizant of the alternate resources available to us. I am optimistic that we can make this a successful endeavor.

My faculty mentor is dedicated and caring. I value these qualities in a person very much. I know that I am fortunate to have found someone who loves her work and is willing to share her wisdom with me. I will do my best to try to plan my own work in advance to accommodate this issue. So unless she decides to dump me, I think this means we’re “going steady.”

Teachers are expected to reach unattainable goals with inadequate tools. The miracle is that at times they accomplish this impossible task. ~ Haim G. Ginott

  13. Blog # 5- My Advisor's Status
    Lorna V. Beltran

    October 20, 2010

    Advisor’s Status

Between my meeting with Dr. Winter last week and the feedback from my advisor, Dr. C. Wright, I am beginning to narrow down and seriously focus on my project description. Narrowing my topic down is still quite difficult for me at this time, it feels like walking with one foot and using crutches to the other as I really would like to expand as much as I can all problems that I continue to experience and that they are all related to my interdisciplinary studies which are the Organizational Management and Communication. Both Dr. Winter and Dr. Wright have supported me clearly which pave the way to concentrate on one direction at this time. Below is the comment of Dr. Wright as excerpted from her email.
    “Catherine Wright to me
show details Oct 13 (3 days ago)
I don't know, but he might be concerned with this statement from your piece:
"I think that morale, character and ethical discipline associated with professional, clear and concise communication and profound understanding should come first."
    and/or this statement:
"I want to find out how organization’s objectives such as policies, interpersonal relations and communication may get implemented by the middle management to peers without suffering any undue conviction such as accepting criticism positively, defensiveness from subordinates, personal attacks, nagging problems and etc."
I get where you're coming from and what you're trying to do, but my guess is that he wants you to be far more specific. Hone down exactly to what you want to study. Are you looking at the morale? Poeple's character? Middle/higher manager's ethical discipline? Or, are you more concerned with how people in middle management communicate with their subordinates? Are you looking at policies or relationships? Are you looking at organizational communication or interpersonal communication?
Does that help? Focus on exactly what you want to do and then from that point, all the questions and sub-questions will spring forth.
    Cathy”
The guidance from both Dr. Winter and Dr. Wright should help me to move on forward on focusing exactly what I really want to do. Throw the crutches away and “bravely” concentrate with what is really very imperative for me at this time.

  17. Research Log# 5: Current status of your relationship with your faculty advisor.
My advisor R. Redman has helped me revise my project description and provided suggestions on sources that may help me better answer my research question. In choosing Ms. Redman, I felt that her background would benefit me with the direction that I wanted to take this research project. She teaches in the IT department but has a minor in administration of justice, a master's degree in forensic science with a concentration in high tech crime. She also has a Virginia teaching license with endorsements in business & information technology and computer science. She currently work full time like myself and has experience in running her families businesses as well as her own. I felt with her high tech crime background, she could understand why I wanted to combine business and criminal justice as my disciplines. The next step that she directed me to take is “Once you get into your research more, you will want to come up with your thesis statement, which will be your answer to that research question. You will need to have the research and information to support your thesis”
After meeting with Dr. Winter and reviewing my status, I have scheduled a “face time” meeting with Ms. Redman and she agreed to meet with me over the course of completing this project.

My advisor is a professor at the School of Management. She was very helpful in helping me shape my concentration and deciding what courses to take. This happened before BIS 390. Now she advised me on the research project and I incorporated her input. She is very quick to answer my e-mails and is always willing to meet when necessary, although she is very busy. I think we have a very good relationship and I value her advice a lot.

I have been putting off this research log in the faint hope that my advisor would have responded to my emails by now. Alas, not. In the beginning, he and I had a great relationship; all my emails were answered promptly and he was quick with a ‘yes’ or a suggestion. Now, I will have to chase him down to see if he is not getting my emails, if he is not able to answer, or, God forbid, he is no longer interested in being my advisor. Writing this, I remember that I was supposed to call him yesterday if he had not yet responded. Whoops. I will do that tomorrow.

My advisor and I just started working together in July (he was a professor in an ICAR class I had taken). I sent him my final draft of Project Description, and he responded promptly to say that he would review and provide feedback shortly. He also wrote that he has another student researching water conflict as well, and he forwarded some source links that I'll be sorting through over the next few days as I finalize my annotated bibliography.

  22. Research Log # 5 - Relationship with mentor
I meet my mentor about two years ago when I took a class in Special Education. Ms. Sara Mills was teaching that class and was an excellent, energetic and active professor. Ms. Mills is a PHD student in the Education and Human Development department. She has years of experience teaching children with special needs in the public schools. In her class, we were supposed to put some number of hours of field experience and I was able to work with speech language pathologists and shadow them in several home visit sessions. During the intervention sessions, learned more about the role of a speech therapist and how different types of disabilities can affect language. It was after this project I started becoming more interested in learning about language disabilities. Ms. Mills in the past two years has been a great advisor and always present when I have concern about anything related to my education.
These past few weeks have been very stressful for me since I wasn’t so sure which direction to take with my research paper. Ms. Mills took some time a side to hear my ideas of how I wanted to incorporate the effectiveness of Instructional Technology in children who are language delayed. She gave me her perspective of how useful computers have been in the school system and suggested I looked into different software and typed of modifications that could applied for children ages 2-6 with language disabilities.
Dr. Winter was also a great resource and gave me some ideas on different directions I could go with my topic and different resources that is out there for me to research. At this point, I feel like my project has a purpose as I am no longer shooting blindly at different directions.

  23. (Research Log #5):

My mentor Lisa Nanni-Messegee, an adjunct professor in the Theater Department, is great as she has a lot of experience in Theater and Film and she owns a production company and is partnered with another non-profit Theater company. This takes into account all the aspects of my planned major. She has been very helpful with everything that I have had to work on in this class. There are some weeks that we contact by e-mail. We even contact by phone if the question is too confusing over e-mail. She is more than willing to take the time to help me with any questions I have if she has an answer and if she doesn’t, she usually knows someone who does. We meet almost every week as she is also my acting coach. We discuss my BIS studies in some detail before every coaching session. I must admit this is really cutting into my coaching time, which is the time I get to play and do the things I really love doing. In conclusion, I would say that my faculty mentor and I have a strong working relationship and that things are going well.

I met my mentor last year. Tom Ashcraft is the the director of the sculpture department and he was partly responsible for the design of the new School of Art here at GMU. Tom has encouraged me to do some pieces in the sculpture department I would have never thought I would be able to create. GMU does not have an architecture or interior design department, so when I worked with Tom in the sculpture department I asked him if he would be my academic adviser. He told me, that it took him a while to find out what he really wanted to do with himself. He didn't feel like going to college and he moved to some island and built boats for a few years; he says, well look at me know. Everything is possible if you put your mind into it. I think I need this type of attitude versus the designer with experience which does not exist at GMU. His open-mindedness is of great help for me. My ideas are broad and holistic and Tom speaks that language. We will be getting together next week again to "brainstorm" more and get inspired.

  25. Research log #5 My relationship with my faculty mentor:
My faculty mentor is Ms. Nan Peck and she is an adjunct professor in the communication department. She has been very instrumental in helping me with this project and although she is not familiar with the topic I want to research, she is familiar with the communication theories that relate to it.

She is easy to communicate with and we speak on a weekly basis. Most of our communication has been through email. She is responsive and I couldn't ask for a better faculty mentor. I feel as though she cares, just by her thoughtful responses. She has given me several ideas that I plan on expanding upon and has demonstrated to me that she is really interested in helping me to achieve my goals.

I really appreciate her guidance and I am glad she was able to assist me in this endeavor. I know that she is very busy but she still takes the time to make sure that I am heading in the right direction. GMU is lucky to have her and so am I.

The house is clean. The laundry is done. Emails and phone calls have been returned.

I have arrived. I am at “That Place” that Aaron warned us about several weeks ago as we sat in SUB II and prayed for the bizarre music seeping into our room to end.

Feeling lost among all of the articles, books and notes collected for my research proposal, it appears that I am at an impasse. I am prowling around the house hoping to find anything else that “must” be done before I return to the awful partial draft I began writing many hours ago.

I remind myself that writing is hard, and that tomorrow will be a better day. I have always had great respect for people who write for a living. I have even greater respect for them now.

I am at the point in my research where I have printed 35 articles, which are all scattered around my dining room in piles I pretend are organized; I have checked 8 books out of the library, which are full of sticky notes; I have worked on BIS for 5 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday; somehow, though, I have only written a fourth of my literature review. I have work the next three days, physical therapy after work on Tuesday, a family to feed.

My mother used to say that “this too shall pass” were the most beautiful words in the English language. I am clinging to that at the moment. The good part is that this assignment is directly related to gaining admittance into 490, so this work shall not be for naught. I am gaining valuable insight into my topic and pulling together ideas for further research. I would really be enjoying writing it (in a sick kind of way) if I could just stop time and have 12 free hours.

Yesterday I got out of bed and was typing on my computer without even stopping for coffee. The ideas are there; I have to figure out a way to get them to flow that easily more consistently.

    Beltran, Lorna

I actually spent my entire weekend trying to decipher what to do for this assignment. I really did not want to do the shopping for the Halloween party and buy too much stuff of the same kind and end up with a lousy party. I have seriously focused on how I can entice my readers without them falling asleep on my research. I want to put action to my topic where it could be more exciting. I have used some testimonials and went back to my old notes from previous semester about my topic. I took all the required courses on MSOM to prepare me for BIS 390. I am still drowning. I’ve asked my son and friends thru the facebook to at least provide me a jump start. My son said to observe cattles on duty and how they work on the fields so I could be enlightened to start writing about my topic. I panic…and panic…and lost my thinking ability.
I finally wrote 7 pages of my literature review not so sure if that is what Dr. Winter is
    looking for. ……I

I had not yet spoken to my adviser, but I have emailed him mailed him all my work thus far. I am hoping to be able to see him this week to find out where I stand. I know that I have a lot of ideas in many of these ideas may need to wait until I do my final paper. The ideas and the information are coming together well except that know if it has gotten down on paper. We only have a few more weeks; I am feeling that I have much to do.
I have about 15 books I have bookmarked, and about 30 articles I have collected but have not read yet. The research has been very exciting to me I am finding many resources which support my theory about why school psychologist have difficulty in supporting, accepting and carrying out evaluations and assessments done by clinical psychologists. Much of it has to do with funding, since the state and school district are required to pay for services before being reimbursed for the services that they provide.
Become an interesting article in the department of education which actually discuss is how to impede providing services in special education. This was not surprising to me. There are many times in the education of my own son were I felt that the school district was purposefully withholding services which my son needed. Fortunately, I never gave up and because of the services that he was able to obtain the progressed better through his academics then they believed that he achieve. Michael is still amid young man with many deficits, and will always have to be taking care of, that is always willing to learn and do the best that he can.

I have started my background literature review more than once and I’m still putting it together. I’m trying not to get to the point of not caring what it says and just adding data, I want it to be meaningful. My advisor sent me some very helpful information to review and I’m going through that now but unlike Gail, my house is not clean, laundry is waiting on me and my other classes are suffering slightly. Worst of all, people at work expect me to work and not on my literature review!

Worked on my Lit Review and ended up wasting the whole afternoon wrapping my head back around where the hell I'm going with this topic...i get so caught up in the root cause analysis of the problem that it overwhelms me. I can't take on the social and economic inequities that perpetuate poverty and therefore cause lack of access to water; I'm only grappling with barriers and solutions three layers up, and I have to be at peace with that. I got there, but it took way too long - time wasted that I don't have.

Other folks such as Lisa and Gail are also feeling the overwhelm on competing demands...but somehow we make it all work (and get a few new gray hairs and a few less miles on the heart) in the long run.

For the past few days I have been compiling sources and in-between midterm exams, I have been trying to read as much as possible as it relates to my topic. I feel as though I am getting a lot closer but at the same time I still feel distant. I found some research(congressional hearings) that directly relate to my topic but I am not sure how to cite it properly. I definitely feel as though I am behind. it seems like there are some people who got it together then I do so I feel like I am playing catch up and as soon as I catch up everyone takes off again. I just begun to write my literature review and to be honest Its shaping up but not nearly as much as I want it to. Lisa I feel your frustration but hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I have dozens of podcasts on congressional hearing and testimony but I am not really sure how to make it all come together. I also have research some communication theories and no sure exactly how they fit in either. The good news is, I am a lot closer then I was when we started. I am hoping that we all get it together sooner then later and that BIS 490 will be a lot easier to navigate through. wouldn't that be nice? o is it just my wishful thinking. All I know is that I need help, maybe two faculty advisors!!LOL!

Over the last couple of weeks, I worked on the annotated bibliographies of the sources that I will be using for my project, which took hours upon hours to complete. Research in its own right can be difficult enough without adding the added task of annotating to it. I was up until 3am most nights for about two weeks straight. It even took me several hours to review it and organize it. This was however, very effective in helping me with my background literature review. Because I spent so much time on my annotated bibliography, I felt like working on my background literature review became easier for me. Although, I did not by any means think it was easy, Lorna, I too had a difficult time trying to make it interesting. And, I do not know if I did it right, but it is done, so yay! I appreciated reading all of the responses about how it was difficult managing time, because it gave me a sense that I wasn’t the only one who found it difficult working on those bibliographies. I am dreading the rest of this week because not only are more of those annotated bibliographies due, but also more papers as well. I am having difficulty because I have more than just the writing to think about, which in itself is becoming overwhelming. So, I am really anxious to find my plays and get started on the really fun part of this project. That being said, I was able to find some very fun articles that drew my interest along the way.

  36. Research Log #5 - Current Relationship Status with Faculty Advisor

My faculty advisor Norm Stanhope and I have had a nice working relationship for the last year and a half. Dr. Stanhope is a psychology professor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences whom I first met while taking one of his classes. I have been forwarding my paperwork to him as I finished it, so we met for lunch today to discuss my BIS 390 Investigative Research paper as requested. He gave an important opinion about including the grown children and informal caregiver of the older adult who are making their lifestyle transitions in my research.

  37. Log #5,

I have good relationship with my advisor. He is a hands of advisors who staunchly follows the belief that he is not the sage on the stage and I am the expert. This is a good method. Because it forces me to become the expert that I need to be to get through the BIS process successfully.

I am overwhelmed with everything that is going on in this phase of the class, but the research for the 10+ articles for this class went very well for me. Once I could get away from my business and spend time alone at the computer with the on-line GMU library connection, there seemed to be several articles that I could use for this project. I believe I chose the right ones to start this process and look forward in obtaining more. The creation of the Investigative Research Proposal Background Review is a challenge, but something I will get through as well.

  40. research log #6 by Iris White

I know exactly what it is that I have to do. I am often not sure about the preciseness of things (I dread citations and "busywork"). That is what is holding me back. I was in the Johnson library again on Monday and met with another wonderful research librarian. She, as well as the first one who helped me, invited me to come to her house. I love it when people are getting excited about my project. It gives me more confidence, that this is a real issue. I tend to forget that sometimes, especially as I have not worked as a designer in a little while. Instead, I am thinking about these issues in a very theoretical manner. Next to making sure my house is spotless ;) another thing that keeps me busy is my drawing class, with a professor who assigns self portraits every week on sheets of paper as large as 48" x 36" depicting our inner state of mind haha...this is quite a semester. I am not a smoker, but I became one in one of my works. Okay, I will read over this literature review one more time and hit the send button. Sorry it was late, Aaron!

  41. EThompson- Research log #5 – Relationship with Advisor
I have a terrific relationship with my advisor, Pete Farrell. He is director of business development for the GMU IT school, as well as a past president of Alumni Association. I took a class from him last summer (2009) and we hit it off immediately. His docket for advisees was already full, but he took me on anyway (and I committed to be as low maintenance as possible). I wanted Pete for my advisor for two reasons: he was more experienced than I was in my field, and, although a technology professor, was impressively adept at people skills. One of the best I had encountered, either here or in my work experience. So he understands, and we have talked from the beginning of our relationship, about what happens when computer software and people collide. We are both extremely busy, so touch base every few months. But because we understand each other so well it does not take much communication to keep on the same page.
